Art and Code Club

Artists who code, coders who art.

Daniel Shiffman and Jer Thorpe Google+ Hangout Friday February 16

If you do the Processing you probably already know about Jer (@blprnt) Thorp and Daniel (@shiffman) Shiffman. But if you need a refresher, Jer is the "Data Artist in Residence" at the New York Times and Daniel Shiffman is the creator of The Nature of Code, which is a great set of online arty-codey tutorials as well as a forthcoming book.

Anyway according to their respective Twitters, they're hosting a Google+ "Hangout". Tomorrow (Friday, February 16) at 3:00pm EST. I'll be listening in, you probably should too.

Jer posted details in a Google+ post.

Hey it's time for another Art and Code Club meeting! We'll be getting together on Tuesday, January 10 at 7:00PM. Chicago Furniture Revival has been kind enough to offer their space to us again. Please RSVP at http://januaryartandcode.eventbrite.com/. We're limiting attendance to 20 people, so sign up quickly.

Chicago software developer and noted automobile enthusiast Andrew Bloom will be discussing the development of his latest project: Mr. Shame, an Arduino controlled, HTTP-controlled traffic light designed as a build status indicator for Andrew's software team.

We'll also discuss solutions to the Instagram Engineering Unshredder, which challenges software developers to create a program that will unscramble and reassemble a "shredded" digital image.

If you have other topics you'd like to discuss or projects you'd like to demonstrate please shoot me an email at josh@artandcodeclub.org.

RSVP here: http://januaryartandcode.eventbrite.com/

Lua environment for the iPad

This might be the most exciting thing I've seen yet for the iPad. It's an indication that Apple is willing to expand on the capabilities of the platform and loosen the restrictions on what developers can ship via the App Store as the product matures. I'm very excited to see where this leads.

Paul Hertz at dorkbot Chicago on Thursday October 27 at 7pm

Paul Hertz will present his Processing library IgnoCodeLib (http://ignotus.com/ignocodelib/index.html), which should be available in a new version for this Thursday's Dorkbot gathering.

I'll be out of town, but please go check this out! Cross-pollination between A&CC and Dorkbot is heartily encouraged.

Jer Thorpe's grouping algorithm for the 9/11 Memorial in NYC

The 2,983 names—etched across bronze panels surrounding two memorial pools of water, one north and one south—are strung together in a way that reflects thousands of complex interpersonal relationships forged before the attacks and, on at least one occasion, during the immediate aftermath.

Jer Thorpe (@blprnt) designed the algorithm that organized the names of victims on the new 9/11 memorial in New York City.
